When selecting tennis shoes for men, there are several factors to consider, including durability, stability, comfort, weight, and fit. It is important to find a pair of shoes that are suitable for your feet. We understand that finding this information online can be challenging, so we will provide as much information as possible to assist you in finding the perfect shoes for your foot type. If you are a skilled tennis player who plays on various surfaces, it is recommended to have two pairs of tennis shoes. This is because a clay tennis shoe has a different sole than a shoe for multiple surfaces, which provides a specific grip to prevent slipping. However, if you do not want to spend too much money and do not play on clay courts, a shoe designed for all court surfaces will do the job.

In this article I will compare the following:

  • Durability/robustness
  • Stability
  • Comfort
  • Weight
  • Price
  • Width
  • Arch
  • Break-in

Let’s get started

New Balance Coco CG1

New Balance Coco CG1 mens tennis shoes

New Balance and Coco Gauff collaborated to create her first signature shoe, called the Coco CG1, which is full of innovation and personality. The shoe is designed to be unisex and has a D-width last. The design of this shoe is just amazing in my opinion, but are we really choosing a tennis pair for its look, or aren’t we a little bit curious about its overall specs? Let’s dive into it now:

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 3.5/5

There was some discussion among our team regarding the durability of the Coco CG1s. While some playtesters were happy with the level of durability, others desired greater longevity from the outsoles. There have been a few concerns regarding the outsoles that appeared to smooth out after a couple of weeks of serious wear.

Stability → Rated 4.5/5

The stability of the New Balance Coco CG1 feels so stable and supportive that you can slide on the court with confidence. It was designed with a band that goes across the foot for extra support and stability while moving laterally.

Comfort → Rated 2.5/5

The New Balance Coco CG1 comfort has left mixed opinions among various testers. Some players say it broke in pretty quickly while others said they needed a tiny bit more time for their feet to get used to the shoes. Despite the adaptation time, the underfoot cushioning is great, and you will probably have no aches or pains after your first few hitting sessions. Last but not least, for many players, the New Balance Coco CG1 appears to not really be breathable.

Weight → Rated 2.5/5

Nike Zoom Vapor 11

Nike zoom vapor 11

The Nike Vapor 11 has received approval from top athletes and is returning with great success. Its design has been modified to enhance speed and bring you closer to the ground, while still providing enough support for you to move comfortably during long matches. The shoe’s dependable molded sidewall and breathable upper, which are classic features, add to its durable and dynamic design that you are familiar with and have grown to like.

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 3.5/5

The outsole is designed using data to provide a balanced combination of traction and flexibility, while also being able to withstand the impact of sliding. The thermoplastic polyurethane areas of the outsole have a thicker tread to increase their durability yet have some space between the rubber and the upper TPU pieces which might cause durability concerns if you are a big slider. The shoelaces were designed in a way to prevent players to burn them while sliding on the court. The ankle collar is a little bit higher on the inside than on the outside.

Stability → Rated 3/5

The Nike Vaport 11 has a molded sidewall to improve lateral support and stability while moving on the court. Your heel will also be really well maintained and your ankle as well due to the well designed upper shoe

Comfort → Rated 4/5

Everything about this Nike Vaport 11 is comfortable except for maybe the midsole foam which could be enhanced a tiny bit more because it does not have a shank to hold it up. Overall, playtesters are really satisfied with the comfort of this shoe and the break-in period is really slight.

15.5 ounces (size 10.5)

Additional (non-rated) information:

Babolat Propulse Fury 3 AC

Babolat Propulse Fury 3 men tennis shoes

This new version of the Babolat Propulse Fury 3 AC enhances the support and stability that the Propulse is known for, and also offers improved cushioning and durability. The midsole now contains more EVA foam, while the insoles are made with Ortholite comfort foam, resulting in a more comfortable and soft feel for the feet, according to our playtesters. To ensure that the foot stays securely in place, the shoe has a 360-degree fit and a reinforcement plate in the shank area. The upper’s medial side has added protection, and the Lace-in system prevents the laces from getting damaged due to dragging. The outsole is made with Michelin’s high-quality rubber formula, which maximizes durability and traction on all court surfaces, particularly hard courts. The shoe comes with a six-month guarantee for the outsole’s durability.

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 4.5/5

These shoes are exceptional in their category because they come with a durability guarantee of six months. They are an excellent option for players who play often as the Propulse Fury 3 shoes have proven to be highly durable. Moreover, the guarantee provides peace of mind during extended hitting sessions since there are no worries about the shoes wearing out quickly.

Nike Zoom Vapor Cage 4

Nike zoom vapor cage 4

The Nike Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 shoes were created with ATP professional Rafael Nadal, one of tennis’ best movers, in mind. Nike combined the best features of the Cage and Vapor lines to create this hybrid shoe, which players can easily see the inspiration from each series. The shoes are loaded with features, such as a Zoom Air unit for comfort, a unique lacing system for foot support, and foot frame technology for enhanced stability. Some testers recommended sizing down a half size for a better fit for narrower feet.

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 5/5

Nike used Kurim material to reinforce the outsole of the Vapor Cage 4, ensuring greater sturdiness regardless of the type of court surface. Due to the outsole wrapping around the toe guard and medial side of the shoe, this shoe is one of the best when it comes to durability; this Nike Vapor Cage 4 was built to last.

Stability → Rated 4.5/5

Even though the rounded shape of the outsole might seem unstable at first sight, it is actually not the case. The Nike Air Cage offers great support and stability even on intense directional changes or while sliding. To sum up, the wider base provided a solid platform, and the upper maintains really good rigidity that keeps your foot stable.

Comfort → Rated 4/5

The Nike Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 provides excellent comfort, thanks in part to a layer of foam that surrounds your foot located in the midsole. The uppers feel firm and supportive and testers say that they do not feel any hot spots, pinching, or blisters. Therefore, due to the pretty stiff material, you might need a few hours before your feet get used to the shoe.

Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 4

Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 4 men tennis shoes

Adidas has released the fourth version of their popular Ubersonic line, which boasts a fresh cushioning system. Our playtesters are big fans of the adizero Ubersonic 4 and its responsive Lightstrike cushioning, which provides ample support and comfort during every step. Despite their light weight, the Primeknit uppers keep players feeling comfortable and stable on the court. The outsoles offer exceptional grip, and the Adiwear rubber compound provides good durability considering its weight. In summary, the adizero Ubersonic 4 shoes are an excellent choice for players seeking fast and stable shoes with exceptional traction for even the most challenging matches.

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 4/5

For players who are particularly aggressive or tend to drag their toes, the Adizero Ubersonic 4’s toebox is durable enough to withstand wear and tear over time. Thanks to the adiwear rubber compound on the outsoles, the Adizero Ubersonic 4 is ever more resistant to the hard court slides.

Stability → Rated 3.5/5

Our playtesters felt that the Adizero Ubersonic 4s provided them with ample support and a sense of being close to the ground. Therefore, on some intense forward stops, your toes could slightly be moving at the end of the shoe which makes it a little bit less stable.

Comfort → Rated 4.5/5

According to advanced players, this shoe is game-ready right out of the box and doesn’t give the impression of being rigid or lacking flexibility. Compared to the previous version, the Adizero Ubersonic 4 has a more snug toebox that is preferred by people with narrower feet. However, individuals with wider feet may find the fit to be too tight and constraining. Its Lightstrike cushioning is really responsive which allows players to recover and move quickly.

Asics Gel Resolution 8

Aics Gel Resolution 8 men tennis shoes

The new Asics Gel Resolution 8s have enhanced the already good shoes, taking inspiration from aggressive mover Gael Monfils. The Gel Resolution 8s are fantastic tennis shoes for men and provide great comfort, support, and stability compared to the previous versions. The new upper includes a PU mesh material for improved flexibility, along with Dynawrap and Dynawall technologies for a fully locked-in feel while still allowing freedom of movement.

Additionally, the external heel counter has been lowered for better fit, and the outsole has been updated for improved grip and durability. Although the Gel Resolution 8s are similar to the previous models, our playtesters noted subtle positive changes. They required a short break-in period but then provided an optimal fit and superior comfort. The shoes offered excellent stability and support and improved locked-in feel during lateral movements. Traction was consistent, and durability was on par with previous models. Overall, the Gel Resolution 8s performed exceptionally well, making them top-of-the-line performance shoes.

Durability/Robustness → Rated: 4,5/5

The Gel Resolution line has a reputation for being very durable, and it’s difficult to find any weaknesses in this area, especially with a guarantee of six months of outsole durability. These shoes offer impressive durability, thanks in part to a substantial amount of protection at the toe that guards against toe-dragging. If we had to nitpick, some players have reported minor wear on the toes after extensive use.

Support/Stability → Rated 4.5/5

The Gel Resolution 8s offer exceptional support and stability due to their updated upper, which features a Dynawrap and Dynawall construction, enhancing their locked-in feel. The Asics Gel Resolution 8 provides great support and stability, enabling players to slide easily inside the shoes while feeling completely secure. The Dynawrap system is highly valued for its ability to provide a secure fit, while also making the uppers of the shoes flexible and comfortable, and adding ample lateral support.

Comfort → Rated 4,5/5

The Gel Resolution 8 is well appreciated and offers great comfort even for players who have wide feet and usually need a break-in period (they still might have a break-in period but not as long as the previous model for instance). The Gel technology located underfoot remains to offer outstanding cushioning, and with the incorporation of Flyte Foam, the shoes now have a comfortable and reactive sensation. The level of cushioning is excellent and your arches will feel well-maintained. Lastly, if you decide to purchase the Aspics Gel Resolution 8, you might consider going down half a size

Asics Gel Resolution 9

Asics Gel Resolution 9

The Asics Gel Resolution 9 is a stability shoe designed for baseliners, and it holds the leading position in Asics’ premium tennis shoe range. Alongside the Solution Speed (lighter weight) and the Court FF (a mix of Gel Resolution and Solution Speed), it completes the lineup.

This shoe is easily identifiable due to its widespread use on the ATP and WTA tours, being favored by top players like Matteo Berrettini and Iga Swiatek.

However, its popularity isn’t limited to sponsored athletes; even in the lower tiers of professional tennis, numerous Futures and Challenger events players can be seen sporting a pair of Gel Resolution shoes.

The Gel Resolution 9 continues the design language of the Gel Resolution 8, much like how the FF 3 was a minor update from the FF 2.

Asics made two updates to enhance the shoe’s stability. The first involves extending the Dynawall, which was present in the previous version, into the heel of the shoe. This extension allows for more dynamic steps along the baseline, providing kinetic stability to the feet. Asics observed players’ movements during matches and how they track down balls when fatigued, which led them to incorporate this feature.

The second update focuses on the outsole’s construction, which now offers a larger contact area with the ground, ensuring a stable landing on the court.

Asics prioritizes lab testing, and at the ASICS Institute of Sports Science (ISS), this modification showcased an improved braking ability with 4.4% more dynamic braking force compared to the Gel Resolution 8.
